I started this project on April 5, 2013 and am just now putting the finishing touches on it. Knitting can teach you a lot of things. This cardigan has taught me that it takes a very, very, very long time to knit myself a sweater.
I marvel at how some knitters can just whip up a sweater in 2-3 weeks. Seriously, I am amazed at this! If I focus completely on starting and finishing a knit, then I might be able to accomplish this task in 5-6 weeks. But that’s if I really give it my full attention. No distractions other than my job, eating and sleeping.
However, I am beyond excited now that I’m nearing the finish line. Several more rounds left to go on that sleeve, some ends to weave in, a good washing/blocking, and this baby will be wrapped snuggly around me on those cool spring mornings. It’s such a gratifying experience. Just knowing how much time went into each and every stitch in this beautiful cardigan. Plus, the color… it’s just perfect and not something I can find in a store. I think that’s what I love so much about knitting. The journey of bringing yarn to life. Of creating something out of nothing. To customize a wardrobe staple so that it is exactly what I want and what I have envisioned. Even if it does take me 2 1/2 years to complete.
In my next post, I’ll talk more about the pattern and the yarn involved in creating this cardigan. And hopefully share some fantastic pictures of my finished knit.
